Super 88 diesel doesn't quite sound right

Postby 57super88 » Wed Jul 26, 2017 8:33 pm

Hello everyone, I recently bought my first diesel oliver, it is a 56 super 88, upon getting it started I noticed that it has a noticeable hollow sounding pop from the exhaust every second or so when it's idling, is this maybe a stuck exhaust valve or plugged injector? Or is this somewhat normal? The tractor did sit for a while before I bought it, just looking at where to start. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks

Try fuel injector additive .
Try also a infra red thermometer on the exhaust manifold to see which one is cylinder is missing , quick and easy stuff first

Have found and fixed my problem theses last few months, turns out the #5 cylinder was down so I just decided to take the head off.... inside I found a groove had developed in the valve seat on the head so I had the valves reseated and an inserts put in where needed at local machine shop, put it back together all new gaskets and seals where required, torqued down and all is well! Sounds and runs great,
