Thanks, I do have a shop manual. The clutch must have been out of wack from new. I don't ever remember a time when gear grinding was not a problem with this tractor. I make sure we check the adjustments.

Got the estimate on the motor rebuild today. Gonna be $1,600 for parts plus some machine work. Gave them the okay to proceed. These guys have done two other motors for me and their work is first rate. Having had experience with engine builders whose work was not first rate, I don't argue prices with these gentlemen. This project is turning out to be a pretty extensive endever. But they always do, don't they?
